ITHACA, NY (WWTI) – You might recognize it on the shelves at your local grocery store, but the story has close ties.
Ithaca Hummus, a local business in central New York City, started at the Ithaca NY Farmers Market in 2014.
From there, the business took off and the products can be found in retail chains across the country. According to Chris Kirby, founder and CEO of Ithaca Hummus, Ithaca Hummus is now the fastest growing hummus company in the country.
However, Kirby aims to keep the company’s mission authentic and real, focusing on the people it serves.
Earlier this fall, the company announced that November 3, election day, will be a paid holiday for all Ithaca Hummus employees.
“I think a lot of people can look and say, ‘Well, you could give people a few hours to go vote, but there’s really more to it,’ Kirby said. “There is a huge responsibility that comes with the freedom and privilege to vote. Specifically, all you need to do is find out who you are voting for and why.
To focus on voting in the upcoming elections, the company has also launched a campaign on both social networks, in partnership with a local organization.
The campaign was called “Ithaca Votes” and called for proposals for street art projects aimed at getting people to the polls.
Kirby said that “at first he wasn’t sure what the answer was. We thought, maybe a thousand dollars and maybe we could make an impact. But we were so surprised by the level of participation and the proposals we received.
In total, the campaign has helped fund seven ongoing projects in Ithaca, NY. One of the projects, featured below, embodies the “vote for our children and our children’s children” message.
But why launch these campaigns. Chris Kirby insisted it’s a factor in keeping his brand authentic and giving back to his community, even as the company reaches a national scale.
